CALL FOR NOMINATIONS SOLIDARITY UGANDA AWARDS 2022

Call for nominations for 2022 Activist of the Year and Community organizer of the Year Awards

The prevalent injustices and oppression that exist in our society are a daily reminder of why we should fight back. There are several injustices evidenced through the rampant land grabbing, illegal evictions, and corruption amongst others. These have led to the loss of lives, destruction of homes and property, and poor service delivery to say the least. In situations like these, amidst threats and intimidation from those in powerful positions, we see members of our communities courageously organizing and standing against this kind of oppression.

Solidarity Uganda continues to recognize these strategic, courageous, and progressive members of society who immensely contribute to social and political change. No matter how small or grand the revolution, the values, and commitment of these individuals are crucial in the fight against injustice and oppression.

There are two awards given each year one being Activist of the year and the other Community organizer of the year.

Nominations are now open.

Join us in celebrating the contributions and achievements of individuals who have selflessly contributed to the social and political change in our communities and country at large.

Who deserves an Award?

The awards recognize individuals who have fearlessly contributed to the attainment of social and political change in our communities. Award recipients include activists and community organizers in Uganda whose personal example of resilience inspires other members of society to stand up to injustice and human rights violations.

Who is an activist?

An activist is a person who campaigns for some kind of change. It can be social or political. For instance, when you participate in or organize a march protesting an unjust eviction you’re an activist.

Someone who’s actively involved in a protest or a political or social cause can be called an activist. Demonstrations, strikes, and sit-ins are all ways that activists work toward achieving the change that they desire.

Who is a Community Organizer?

A Community organizer is an individual devoted to restoring democracy at the grassroots level and energizing citizens to become more active members of their society. Community organizers focus on helping build broken social systems, bringing about meaningful changes to people’s lives, and empowering vulnerable or oppressed populations. Community organizing has the goal of uniting local citizens around a common concern, ranging from preventing crime, to fighting corruption, prejudice, and any form of injustice.  All they do is done collectively with community members.
