2 Stories About This Head

1) It was moulded from mud by a primary school drop-out named Bashid, who lives in a village adjacent to Suzan’s.  He’s quite the craftsman.  Here he is in the flesh:


2) A friend came in to our office today, where I am trying to sell this sculpture to benefit its creator.  Our conversation went something like this:

Friend: “He didn’t make the head correctly.”

Me: “What do you mean?”

Friend: “It doesn’t look like Jesus; the color is wrong.”

Me: “Jesus wasn’t a white guy.”

Friend: “Really?”

Me: “I don’t think anybody knows what Jesus looked like exactly, but he was probably brownish, and with curlier hair than this guy….that’s my best guess.”

So there are still very bright and educated people who believe Jesus was pale….colonialism sinks deep, people.  How damaging it is to a healthy spirituality to understand Jesus was a white man with long straight hair!  (A month or two ago I was at
